Description
Seventeen-year-old Emma suffers first the trauma of watching her beloved mother die slowly of breast cancer, then court-ordered relocation across the country with her three sisters into the care of a father who abandoned them when she was two years old. As if that weren't enough to drive a teen around the bend, additional and potentially fatal threats materialize from a graveyard at the bottom of the hill. But one of these "undead," Amy, is different, and their deep friendship and eventual love transform Emma's soul, and her appreciation for life and love in all their diversity."Saving Amy" is a novel exploring most of the major issues of adolescence: the search for love, the loss of love, separation from parents, acceptance, the idealization and reality of sexuality, selfishness, selflessness, forgiveness. It is a vampire story, but an unusual one in that its message is the redeeming power of love. It presents a fearful image familiar to children: the horror on the other side of the dark bedroom window, then turns the horror into love. This is possible because of the author's clever invention of the "incomplete vampire" who has not lost her soul and is thus capable of love and incapable of wanton destruction of the living. There is the idealization and longing of youth: a gay teen experiencing complete acceptance from most everyone around her; a love that is ideal but impossible because it can only happen with a being that does not exist; the perfect relationship remaining perfect because it is cut short while in full bloom. The violent clashes of a Romeo and Juliet love. Reader Rating: Not rated (0 Ratings)

PrologueOn the eastern outskirts of the expansive city, beyond the lights aglow like a hundred tiny stars in the vortex of blackness, nesting innocently in the comforts of the small, secure neighborhood, a tiny house slept in the middle of a small yard, its white sides glowing in the moonlight. A dog barked from across the street, and a slender figure darted from shadow to shadow, quick as a cat, across the dark lawn and to the sliding glass back door, where it came to a halt and looked in the window. The young woman was standing in the kitchen, visible in the moonlight seeping through the windows, her legs bare and strong, her curvy torso covered by a lacy satin slip reaching just past her bottom. Her long blonde hair shone as she tipped her head back and let the water pour from the crystal glass into her mouth; her arm lifted to reveal the moderately sized ridge that was her breast line. Desire oozed through the creature’s mouth; this one was so perfect, so young, so sexy; he knew he must have her. He waited impatiently until she put her glass on the counter and turned toward the door. Her crystal blue eyes locked onto his and widened; her beautiful red lips opened in surprise and she slowly lifted her hand to her throat. He smiled satisfactorily; he had her. With three graceful strides she was at the entrance, her slender fingers touching the glass, reaching out for him. She slowly unlocked the door and slid it back, letting him stealthily swoop her into his arms and carry her inside. His eyes focused on the house and dropped to the floor as his mind formed the spell; they were alone now. She laid her head against his chest as he carried her through the house, searching for a suitable nesting place. He found a bedroom after only moments of looking; she moaned as he carried her inside and laid her tenderly upon the cool fluffy blanket. The sweet scent of mingled lavender and flesh tantalized his senses as he placed himself strategically on top of her; she let out a little gasp as one of his hands found its way inside her nightshirt to her breast. His fingers spread out on her back as his face nestled into the gentle curve of her neck, pressing into the delicate softness of her skin. A faint pulsing was detectable just beneath the dermis, and as he kissed her up and down, he found the spot he knew was his. His lips opened, his teeth dancing on the tender, virgin skin he was about to take. The points marked the spots they were destined to penetrate, the soft area behind her left ear. Unable to contain himself another moment, he rubbed her breast and buried his fangs greedily in her tender, luscious flesh. Her screams were shrill, ear piercing, but to him they were distant, oceans away. All he knew was the prolific amount of blood gushing into his mouth as they moved, almost too much for him to handle. He wanted more than just the blood; he wanted all of her, he wanted to penetrate her, be inside of her while he drank her precious life, grew stronger from her, make her his. Maybe he would take her as his woman after she turned; it seemed like a high possibility, as he had never fed on anyone so delicious and sexually appeasing as this young woman in his arms now. The hand that was holding her breast slipped between her legs, over her underwear, and she screamed to God, screamed for mercy, as it pulled her nightdress up and began working her panties off. “No!” she cried, thrashing and kicking as though facing the devil himself. Her strength was depleting rapidly; breathing was becoming more of a desperate plea for life every second that ticked by. Her underpants were under her knees—she felt him taking off his own pants—no, she wouldn’t let him do this, she couldn’t—but she couldn’t stop him. She let out a cry of despair as his bare legs touched hers and his hand caressed her thighs. He was about to do it, and she couldn’t stop him… The beast yelped as a searing pain ripped over his back and through his right side. He turned to face a strong, dark-haired man of about thirty, who wielded a splintered closet rod, trying to save his love. Eyes ablaze, the enemy swooped for the man, bat-like and fast as lightning. The jagged edge of the dowel ripped through clothes and flesh once more and the beast surrendered, swooping out of the room and through the open door in the kitchen. The woman groaned from the bed and the man approached her, his vision blurring with tears as she looked at him with that innocent, broken face. “Oh, honey...” he breathed, reaching for her tear-stained cheek and sitting next to her on the bed. “What did he do to you?” She squeaked in response and he ran his loving hands over her naked body, purifying the temple that had been so viciously deflowered. “Did he manage to do it?” he whispered. “Did he get you?” “No…” she choked, her voice barely stronger than a breath. “Almost. No-no.” Tears fell from his eyes as he gently wiped the blood from her neck, revealing the punctures the monster had created. “Oh my God…” he whispered. “Could it be? Is it possible?” He ran from the room and dialed 911 before returning with a rag for her to hold over her throat. “I called the emergency room. They’re on their way. Hold this on there…yeah…like that…” “He hurt me…” she whispered, beginning to cry. “Oh, darling…” The man lay down and cradled the soft, broken body of his lover in his arms. “I-I hardly know what happened…” she wept. “Just that it hurt.” “What do we do?” “He’ll come back for me,” she whispered. “I know he will. He’s not giving up, Rob. He loved it too much.” He looked into her eyes sadly and shook his head as sirens wailed in the distance. “We need to get out of this city.”
